Wang Xiaoliang, director-general of the Network Audiovisual Programme Management Department at China's National Radio and Television Administration, gave figures for the microdrama sector at a State Council Information Office briefing on 17 September 2026.

He put the national microdrama audience at more than 800m users and said the 2025 market exceeded RMB 100bn. In the first eight months of 2026, he said, 430,000 microdramas went online, 13 times the total for all of last year, with AI-generated dramas accounting for more than 90% of them.

On enforcement, he said 68,000 non-compliant microdramas had been removed across the internet this year and platforms had been directed to act against more than 1,200 accounts, of which over 90% concerned AI dramas. Priority targets were harmful and vulgar content, material harmful to children, and copyright infringement.

He said platforms would be guided to open dedicated live-action sections with funding support, and that AI dramas should carry content labelling. The figure of 430,000 is a count of titles brought online rather than commercially released productions.
