AI microdramas: who uses generative AI, and the rules that apply
By count, most new microdramas are AI-generated. China's regulator put AI dramas at more than 90% of 430,000 titles brought online from January to August 2026, and Owl & Co. found two-thirds of third-quarter releases outside China on 20 top platforms were AI-made. China requires an AI label in every AI-made episode; the EU's Article 50 reaches deep fakes.
How many microdramas are AI-generated?
AI output has risen through 2026 inside and outside China. China's National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) said 430,000 microdramas went online in the first eight months of 2026, 13 times the 2025 total, with AI-generated dramas more than 90% of them (NRTA briefing). Outside China, Owl & Co. found, as The Hollywood Reporter reported on 20 October 2026, that two-thirds of vertical drama releases on 20 top platforms in the third quarter of 2026 were AI-generated, up from 3% in the first quarter and 28% in the second (Owl & Co.).
DataEye forecast the overseas AI-drama and animated-drama market rising from $100m in 2025 to $650m in 2026 (estimate). It put China's AI short drama segment at ¥40bn for full-year 2026, up 138%, against ¥22bn actual for January to May (market table).

Do audiences watch AI microdramas?
Volume and viewing diverge. DataEye counted more than 221,900 AI short and manga dramas launched in China in the first half of 2026, of which 1,055, or 0.47%, passed 100m views; the vendor described more than 90% as flops (DataEye).
In Owl & Co.'s third-quarter data, the top title by minutes watched was ReelShort's AI-generated The Great and Powerful Genie. The same report found that at ReelShort live-action titles were more likely than AI titles to remain in the top 10% by views 30 days after release, and observed a pullback towards live action in China. The NRTA said in September 2026 that platforms would be guided to open dedicated live-action sections with funding support.
On conversion, one operator reports little difference. Holywater says AI-generated microdrama on its My Muse app converted at 23.6% against 23.9% for live action on My Drama (company) (Holywater report).
Which microdrama companies use generative AI?
AI use runs from all-AI apps to mixed catalogues. Kunlun Tech says its DramaWave app is more than 80% AI-generated, and COL Group builds FlareFlow around content made with its XiaoYao and FlareFlash tools. Kuaishou's interim results count AI-generated short plays in a supply that rose more than fivefold between January and June 2026. Outside China, Pocket Entertainment's US-only Pocket Saga is entirely AI-produced, Inkitt describes its Ironblood service as AI-native, and TrueShort makes AI-generated true crime. Character.AI launched c.ai Series on 9 July 2026 with three AI-produced shows, each episode followed by a chat with the characters.
Shortical carries both kinds. It released Bound by Fire, described as its first fully AI-generated microdrama, on 14 May 2026, and streams Love, Lies & Frank, starring James Franco, which Variety reported used no AI-generated performances or digital replicas and counted among the first series produced under SAG-AFTRA's Verticals Agreement (Shortical's James Franco series).
Selected companies using generative AI

| Holywater | My Muse AI app alongside live-action My Drama | 23.6% conversion on AI against 23.9% on live action | company |
| Inkitt (Ironblood) | AI-native action, superhero and science fiction | About 30 titles a month | company |
| Pocket Saga | All-AI, adapted from audio series | About $15m annualised run rate, September 2026 | company |
| TrueShort | AI true crime, $39.99 a year | $1k to $3k per film, against a stated typical $100k to $300k | company |
| Korai Flix | AI short dramas and AI companions | About 26.0m registered users; $3.5bn pre-money SPAC merger agreed 21 October 2026 | company |
| StoReel (Canvas) | AI-native production layer for creators | More than 80 AI-generated originals; $34m in seed and user-acquisition financing, disclosed 23 June 2026 | company |
Does AI cut microdrama production costs?
Published cost comparisons put AI production well below live action, and most come from the companies themselves. DataEye figures carried by mpost.io, The Standard HK and 36kr put AI production in China below RMB 200k against about RMB 1.5m for live action (estimate). TrueShort cites $1k to $3k per film, Inkitt a roughly 99% reduction for Ironblood, Idilio production 40 times cheaper and 30 times faster, and Story TV a saving of about 75%; all four are company claims. Entrackr's sources put Kuku's microdrama production cost under $100 a minute, against more than $150 in China.
Speed is the other claim. Holywater says production time fell from 12 weeks to two at more than ten times lower cost per finished minute, figures from a single operator and a single flagship title (industry overview; production costs).
Who is investing in AI video for microdrama?
The largest amounts recorded in the funding table for 2026 went to AI video tools rather than to microdrama apps. Kuaishou's filing of 2 July 2026 sets out an investment in Kling AI of about $3.0bn for 16.67%, implying a post-money valuation of about $18bn (Kling AI). Evoken, the parent of LiblibAI, raised about $300m at a valuation above $2bn, Yicai Global reported on 18 June 2026, and AniShort disclosed a strategic round of about RMB 100m on 12 June 2026.
The Information and TechFundingNews reported that Higgsfield AI was in talks to raise $300m to $500m at a $5bn pre-money valuation; the reports describe talks rather than a completed round (Higgsfield). See microdrama funding.
What rules apply to AI microdramas?
China and the EU take different approaches. China's Order No. 16 requires AI-generated or AI-produced micro short dramas to carry a prompt label in a prominent position in every episode, and AI titles enter the heavier filing review tier at ¥800k, against a reported ¥3m for live action (China's microdrama rules). Apps using a filed generative AI service in China have to display the model name and filing number, and at an NRTA symposium on 2 September 2026, participants including 17 platforms and producers agreed that any use of fused likeness or voice requires the rightholder's express authorisation.
In the EU, Article 50 of the AI Act has applied since 2 August 2026. Article 50(2) requires providers of generative AI systems to mark output in machine-readable form, and Article 50(4) requires deployers to disclose deep fakes. The Commission states that not all AI-generated content needs a label; its published text supports, without stating, the reading that a wholly invented AI series is not a deep fake, while a real likeness, a de-aged actor or a synthetic voice of a living performer is. The guidelines are not binding, and only the Court of Justice can interpret Article 50 authoritatively. Systems placed on the market before 2 August 2026 have until 2 December 2026 for machine-readable marking (Article 50 tracker). The Commission's free labelling icons come in three forms: Basic, Fully AI-Generated and Partially AI-Modified. In Germany, the Bundesnetzagentur coordinates AI Act supervision, with the state media authorities competent in the media sector (German supervision).
AI labelling: China and the EU
| China, Order No. 16 | EU, AI Act Article 50 | |
|---|---|---|
| Applies from | 1 September 2026 | 2 August 2026 |
| What is labelled | Every AI-generated or AI-produced micro short drama | Deep fakes, disclosed by deployers; machine-readable marking by providers |
| Placement | Prominent position in every episode | For fictional works, disclosure that does not hamper display or enjoyment |
| Linked rule | AI filing tiers from ¥800k | Fines up to €15m or 3% of worldwide annual turnover |
Frequently asked questions
How many microdramas are made with AI?
Most new titles by count. China's NRTA said AI-generated dramas made up more than 90% of the 430,000 microdramas brought online in the first eight months of 2026. Outside China, Owl & Co. found two-thirds of third-quarter 2026 releases on 20 top platforms were AI-generated, up from 3% in the first quarter.
Do AI microdramas have to be labelled in the EU?
Only in part. Article 50(4) of the AI Act, applicable since 2 August 2026, requires deployers to disclose deep fakes, and the Commission states that not all AI-generated content needs a label. For fictional works, disclosure has to be made in a way that does not hamper the work. A real person's likeness or a synthetic voice of a living actor triggers the duty.
What AI disclosures do Chinese microdrama apps have to make?
Two sets of rules apply. Article 34 of NRTA Order No. 16, in force since 1 September 2026, requires micro short dramas generated or produced using AI to carry a prompt label in a prominent position in every episode. Separately, the Cyberspace Administration of China restated in September 2026 that an app using a filed generative AI service has to display the model name and its filing number.
Are AI microdramas cheaper to make?
On published figures, much cheaper. DataEye put AI production in China below RMB 200k against about RMB 1.5m for live action. Company claims go further: TrueShort cites $1k to $3k per film against a typical $100k to $300k, and Inkitt a roughly 99% saving for Ironblood. None of the company figures is audited.
Do viewers watch AI microdramas as much as live action?
The evidence is mixed. ReelShort's AI-generated The Great and Powerful Genie was the top title by minutes watched in Owl & Co.'s third-quarter 2026 data, and Holywater reports near-equal conversion for AI and live-action titles. But at ReelShort live-action titles were more likely to stay in the top 10% by views after 30 days, and DataEye found 0.47% of Chinese AI dramas passed 100m views.
Who is investing in AI video for microdrama?
Mostly investors in AI video tools. Kuaishou's filing put an investment in Kling AI at about $3.0bn for 16.67%, implying a valuation of about $18bn. Evoken, LiblibAI's parent, raised about $300m, Yicai Global reported, and AniShort disclosed a strategic round of about RMB 100m. Higgsfield AI was reported to be in talks for $300m to $500m at a $5bn pre-money valuation; the reports described talks, not a completed round.
