Microdrama vs vertical drama vs short drama: the terms explained

Microdrama, vertical drama, short drama and mini drama all describe the same product: scripted serials of short episodes made for phones held upright. The word tracks the speaker. App-data vendors mostly say short drama, Omdia and English-language trade press say microdrama, Hollywood's labour agreements say verticals, and Chinese law says 微短剧, micro short drama.

Do microdrama, vertical drama and short drama mean the same thing?

In practice, yes. The terms are applied to the same apps and the same titles. Sensor Tower's review of the category for 2025 is titled State of Short Drama Apps 2025. Dentsu's Entertainment Spotlight 2026 survey, which found DramaBox, My Drama and ReelShort to be the platforms respondents most often subscribed to, calls the format microdramas (Dentsu survey). Owl & Co tracks DramaBox and ReelShort in a quarterly report titled What We Watched on Vertical, which counts vertical drama releases (Owl & Co quarterly report).

A single report can use two of the terms. Holywater Tech and Owl & Co titled their 2026 report The State of Microdrama 2026 and gave its market estimate as vertical drama revenue outside China: $3bn in 2025 and $4bn in 2026 (estimate; State of Microdrama 2026).

What differs is precision. Contracts, filings and Chinese law each define the format, and they do not agree on episode length. Market figures also differ in scope, depending on whether they count drama alone or all vertical video. The format itself is described in what is a vertical drama.

Who uses which term?

The choice of word follows the speaker more than the product. App-data vendors, which measure downloads and in-app spending, mostly say short drama. Omdia, Dentsu, YouTube and the English-language trade press mostly say microdrama. Hollywood's labour agreements say verticals or vertical programs. Chinese platforms say 短剧 (duanju), and the regulator writes 微短剧.

The same slate can carry two labels. TikTok's creator-led slate with Made By Us Studios, announced in October 2026, has been reported both as a microseries slate and, in Deadline's headline, as a microdrama slate (TikTok and Made By Us).

Microdrama definitions compared

Three official documents define the format, and each draws the line in a different place: instalments of approximately three minutes or less in the 2026 memorandum of agreement between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (SAG-AFTRA sideletter), episodes of roughly one to five minutes in iQIYI's annual report for 2025 (iQIYI filing), and under 20 minutes per episode in China's Order No. 16. The documents are quoted in what is a vertical drama.

China's Order No. 16, in force since 1 September 2026, is the widest; its Article 2 also sets the scope as production and public broadcast within China. The Chinese term is not tied to the portrait frame: a September 2026 readout from the regulator referred to the strengths of horizontal and vertical microdrama together, rather than to vertical alone (NRTA readout).

Titles in the market sit within all three limits. Peacock's two Bravo-branded originals run to roughly 60 episodes of 60 to 90 seconds each, per trade reports. Amavizion's Shambles runs 36 episodes of 45 seconds to two minutes, 45 minutes in total (Amavizion's Shambles launch).

Vertical video, vertical feeds and vertical drama

Vertical video is a wider category than vertical drama. It covers all portrait-format video, most of it advertising on Reels and TikTok rather than paid microdrama. The State of Microdrama 2026 report puts the vertical video economy outside China at $150bn in 2026, up 41% (company forecast), against a microdrama sub-figure of about $4bn ex-China in the same report. A figure of about $150bn for 2026 from the media advisor Hernan Lopez also covers all vertical video. Omdia forecasts global microdrama revenue of $14bn in 2026, China included (estimate; three "150" figures).

Streamers' vertical feeds are a third thing. Netflix's Clips, Disney+'s Verts and HBO Max's Shorts show repurposed catalogue clips and trailers in portrait format rather than microdrama. Creator tools such as Meta's Series, which lets creators group Reels into episodes, and YouTube's Shorts series, which adds seasons and episodes to Shorts, give creators an episodic structure.

Social-video usage figures are a different measure again. Germany's ARD/ZDF Medienstudie 2026 put video in social media at 47 minutes a day among 14- to 29-year-olds, but contains no microdrama or vertical drama category (ARD/ZDF study).

Chinese terms, and a unit trap

In Chinese, 短剧 (duanju) means short drama and is the everyday term, used in platform names such as 红果短剧, Hongguo. The legal term is 微短剧, micro short drama, used in the title of Order No. 16. 漫剧 refers to animated or comic-style dramas, which DataEye tracks together with AI drama. DataEye forecasts the overseas AI drama and anime-drama market at $650m in 2026, up from $100m in 2025 (estimate). Kuaishou renders duanju as short play in its English-language filing (Kuaishou filing).

Chinese-language figures carry a unit risk. 亿 means 100m, and summaries routinely render it as billion, inflating figures tenfold. QuestMobile's 8.51亿 users has appeared as "8.51 billion" rather than 851m, and DataEye's 400亿 has appeared as "400 billion yuan" rather than ¥40bn. 亿元 is ¥100m and 亿美元 is $100m: DataEye's 12.7亿美元 for overseas in-app purchase revenue in the first half of 2026 is about $1.27bn. Market figures by basis are compared in microdrama market size and the market table.

Frequently asked questions

Is microdrama the same as vertical drama?

Yes, in practice. Both name scripted serials of short episodes made for phones held upright, and the same apps, ReelShort and DramaBox among them, are described with either term. Holywater Tech and Owl & Co titled their 2026 report The State of Microdrama 2026 while estimating vertical drama revenue. The formal definitions in labour agreements, filings and Chinese law differ on episode length.

What is the difference between short drama and microdrama?

There is none in the product. Short drama is the literal translation of the Chinese 短剧 (duanju) and is the term most app-data vendors use, including Sensor Tower, DataEye, QuestMobile and Insightrackr. Microdrama is more common in English-language trade press and in Omdia's and Dentsu's research. Both refer to apps such as ReelShort, DramaBox and NetShort.

What is a mini drama?

Mini drama is a further synonym, used mainly by platforms and advertisers. Tencent names "mini drama advertisers" as a class of client for its AIM+ automated campaign tools, alongside mini games and mini shops. TikTok launched a branded product called Mini Dramas on 1 July 2026, letting advertisers publish episodic mini-drama series directly on the platform.

What does 微短剧 mean?

微短剧 is the Chinese legal term, translated as micro short drama. China's NRTA uses it in Order No. 16, the Measures for the Administration of Micro Short Drama Development, in force since 1 September 2026. Article 2 defines a micro short drama as running under 20 minutes per episode, a wider definition than iQIYI's one to five minutes or SAG-AFTRA's three minutes or less.

Is a microseries the same as a microdrama?

The terms overlap. Microseries is used mostly by US studios and distributors: aTwist makes original microseries of one to three minutes, and A+E Global Media says almost 200 of its programmes have been reformatted as microseries. TikTok's slate with Made By Us Studios has been reported both as a microseries slate and as a microdrama slate.

Is vertical video the same as vertical drama?

No. Vertical video covers all portrait-format video, most of it advertising on Reels and TikTok. The State of Microdrama 2026 report put the vertical video economy outside China at $150bn for 2026, a company figure, against a microdrama sub-figure of about $4bn in the same report. Omdia forecasts global microdrama revenue, China included, of $14bn in 2026.
