Microdramas in Germany: audience, apps, producers and regulation

ARD and funk have released vertical series, RTLZWEI has produced one, Constantin and UFA are developing titles, and EiLiN and Snaxx have announced subscription terms.
How many people watch microdramas in Germany?
Omdia estimated 4.4m monthly active microdrama users in Germany in 2025, the second-largest audience in Europe after the United Kingdom at 8.2m. Sensor Tower ranked Germany fifth among microdrama markets by revenue in 2025 and first by download growth, at +210% year on year (countries table; microdramas in Europe).
Wider viewing habits are tracked by the ARD/ZDF Medienstudie 2026, published on 22 September 2026. It put video in social media at 47 minutes a day among 14- to 29-year-olds, up from 36 minutes in the 2025 edition. The study has no microdrama category, so the figure describes platform use rather than vertical-drama viewing (Medienstudie).
Which microdrama apps are popular in Germany?
In Apple's German top-grossing entertainment chart on 23 September 2026, DramaBox ranked ninth and NetShort tenth, with StoryReel 12th and ReelShort 18th. The large international apps localise into German. ReelShort serves German users in German through reelshort.com/de, German app-store listings and a German-language YouTube channel. DramaWave, from Kunlun Tech, and COL Group's FlareFlow also operate in Germany among other markets. The audio-series service Pocket FM expanded into Germany in the year to September 2026, and its parent lists an office in Berlin.

German microdrama platforms and their prices
Two German-founded consumer services have published launch details. EiLiN, built by the Munich company Vertical Minds, will launch with 10 to 15 series, managing director Sophie Werdin said at Medientage München on 22 October 2026. A monthly subscription will cost under €15, with season passes on top, and the service will not bill per episode with coins. DWDL reported on 9 September 2026 that EiLiN was scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026 and to pay producers per viewed minute; Werdin gave no launch date in October.
Black Forest Studios, a production company in Kirchzarten near Freiburg, announced on 15 September 2026 that its service, Snaxx, will launch on 1 November 2026 on iOS and Android. DWDL, citing the Snaxx website, gave an ad-supported tier at €4.99 a month and an ad-free tier at €9.99; after free opening episodes, viewers can also unlock single episodes with pre-purchased coins. Snaxx is to carry series shot in 16:9 and cropped to 9:16, and targets ten to 15 series a year from 2027 (Snaxx). MFG Baden-Württemberg awarded the studio's vertical drama Black Forest Royale €127,084 in production funding, as reported by C21Media.
Other German-founded services include Badaboom, announced at Seriencamp in June 2026 by Deep Sauce Labs with Red Pony Pictures and Saxonia Media as production partners, and CandyJar from Inkitt, founded in Berlin in 2013 and now based in San Francisco.

Which German broadcasters and producers make vertical drama?
Public broadcasters release vertical fiction on social platforms. ARD's Between the Beats, produced by Red Pony Pictures and Saxonia Media for Radio Bremen and Saarländischer Rundfunk, launched on TikTok in June 2026; OMR reported on 27 August 2026 views of about 32,000 on the opening episode and about 4,500 on the finale. funk, the ARD and ZDF youth network, released FLEISCHWOLF 2go, about 93 vertical clips of 30 to 90 seconds, from 15 October 2026. ARD has planned a young-adult vertical service, 3 Minuten, for 2027, and Network Movie, part of ZDF Studios, has set up a microdrama unit in Hamburg.
Among commercial broadcasters, RTLZWEI has produced Berlin – Tag & Nacht: Next Generation, a vertical spin-off of its daily series, and said at Medientage München that it plans 60 vertical episodes, mainly for TikTok, calling the project a test balloon. UFA, producer of the RTL dailies Alles was zählt and Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten, said in September 2026 that it is developing vertical microdrama ideas, and described one possible form as spin-offs from those brands. ProSiebenSat.1 has an internal working group on the format, DWDL reported, citing unnamed sources.
Independent producers work for German and international platforms. Constantin Entertainment has 15 to 20 microdramas completed or in development, including two 60-episode English-language series for Crisp Momentum, OMR reported. Banijay Productions Germany produced a 28-episode New Adult microdrama. Victus Films shot Yes!, 60 episodes of one to two minutes, for EiLiN in five days, DWDL reported on 9 September 2026. Bavaria Fiction and Engizek Films are shooting The Munich Billionaire, a working title, as a 90-minute film and a 50-part vertical series for 9n16.com, DWDL reported on 19 October 2026, and Berlin's Hinterhof Film launched the label Hinterhof Verticals in June 2026.
Brand-funded microdrama in Germany
Brand budgets finance much of German microdrama production, MikroDrama.de reported on 3 September 2026 (brand funding). It names Aminho, The Challenge, made in January 2026 for Skechers and initiated by Constantin Creators, as the first German microdrama funded by a brand from the outset: 20 episodes and 1.9m cumulative views, according to the producers. Other cases include Die Neusparer for Sparkasse, by Scholz & Friends, and Deutsche Bahn's Boah. Bahn.
Sandra Freisinger-Heinl, chief executive of the Munich agency Brandplace, told Meedia on 8 September 2026 that the agency is pushing microdrama in Germany as a branded format, noting that Procter & Gamble produces microdramas in the United States. She outlined branded series of 60 to 120 episodes of about 90 seconds at what she called a low six-figure budget (company). The confectionery brand Ahoj-Brause released a seven-part vertical Halloween microdrama with the Berlin agency Ozmoze from 17 October 2026, Horizont reported.
Reported budgets for German originals vary by source. OMR put EiLiN's at €150,000 to €250,000 per title, while the company has given €200,000 to €250,000 a season; DWDL put Yes! in the low six figures in euros, a figure attributed to the producer (production costs).
Which German laws apply to microdrama apps?
Three German laws and one bill bear on the format alongside EU law; the table below sets them out. The Servicestelle Jugendschutz, a state-funded body, published an analysis on 22 May 2026 naming ReelShort, GoodShort and DramaBox and describing cliffhanger paywalls and accumulating micro-transactions; it is commentary, not enforcement. The MedienInvestVG, a bill still in committee, would exempt providers below €10m of turnover; neither the government bill as summarised by the culture ministry nor the Bundesrat's opinion of 10 July 2026 refers to short-form, vertical or micro formats. The Federal Court of Justice extended the cancellation-button duty to fixed-term and one-off-payment offers on 22 May 2025 (I ZR 161/24), as reported by Legal Tribune Online and the law firm Noerr.

Austria and Switzerland
Neither Austria nor Switzerland has local microdrama production. Austria's public broadcaster ORF uses vertical video for news, and Switzerland's SRF has said it is watching the format closely, as reported by persoenlich.com (Europe market table).
